Special team to tackle cyber crime

SURAT: City police will soon have a dedicated group of cops to fight the menace of cyber crimes. The cops in the group would need to clear a certification examination to become eligible to carry out cyber crime-related investigation.

Each police station in the city will have experts to investigate internet-related crimes as at least 70 policemen are undergoing 15-day training in cyber crime investigation.

The 70 constables, who have been chosen from all the police stations of the city, had evinced interest in cybercrime investigation. They will have to appear in an online test conducted by the International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants upon the completion of their training.

There is consistent rise in the number of crimes related to internet. Therefore, the city police have decided to increase the number of policemen having knowledge of cyber security. So far, the cyber crime cell in the detection of crime branch was dealing with major cases.

“We have an operational cyber crime cell in the crime branch but considering the rising number and different types of cases from phishing, hacking, social networking site-related crime to virus threats, there is a need for the police to remain updated. We are creating a team of cyber cops keeping the future in mind,” said Antrip Sood, deputy commissioner of police, crime branch.

The team will be trained in seven batches. Each batch will have 10 members. They will need to appear in a test after the completion of the 15 days of training. The coaching is being offered free by Meclosys Information Service. “The cops will also be trained about basic computer knowledge to carry out office work. It will improve the overall efficiency of the policemen,” Sood said.

Crime branch uses cyber expertise to detect online bank account hacking, online fraud schemes, hacking of e-mail and social networking accounts, theft from ATM and also to trace hardcore criminals.

Surat is the first city in India to have a real-time CCTV surveillance network. The project has been developed on a public-private partnership with Rs 12 crore which came in as donations. The city police are now training their own staff to make optimum use of the upgraded technological infrastructure.
