NSP offer tools to fight cyber crime against kids

People in the panhandle came together in Scottsbluff on Saturday to learn more on how to keep kids safe when it comes to cyber crimes.

The Nebraska State Patrol teamed up with the child advocacy program CAPStone to offer tools to several educators and law enforcement officials on how to protect children from online predators.

About 50 people were on hand for the workshop that covered several topics including cyber bullying and sexting.

CAPStone Forensic Interviewer Shelley Thomas says technology today is making it easier for online predators to take advantage of kids.

“It’s important because more and more children have smart phones and computers. Even children as young as six we find are having telephones and access to computers. In the Internet there are a lot of predators from all over the world that are wanting to prey on innocent children.” Said Thomas.

Sergeant Monty Lovelace with the Nebraska State Patrol encouraged people to learn about smartphone apps kids are using these days like SnapChat.

Lovelace says this app and others are how predators are communicating with kids more and more these days.

“In the last two years since 2012, Troop E which is in the panhandle here, we’ve worked approximately 60 different cases involving online enticement and child porn. Locally, we’ve made over 20 arrests and a lot of the other cases were sent to other jurisdictions.”

Lovelace says by informing residents in the panhandle and state, we can lower the number of cyber crimes significantly.
