Metro East detectives selected to crack down on cybercrime

(KMOV.com) – A Metro East detective is taking part in a program to help local police take on cybercrime.

O’Fallon police detective William Barlock is one of 200 detectives who applied to be a part of a Secret Service Task Force, but Barlock is just one of seven Metro East detectives who have been selected to investigate electronic crimes. The Secret Service told News 4 the need for computer forensics experts is on the rise.

“Everybody has a computer including in their pocket,” Barlock said. “It’s very important for us to be available and be able to examine those things to recover certain evidence and do it properly.”

Barlock has been equipped with specialized computer forensic equipment, which costs around $30,000.

“Bill will be gone a little bit more, but what he brings back to us with his investigative skills and the equipment makes us a better police department,” said O’Fallon Chief of Police Eric Von Hook.

Barlock will also investigate cybercrimes for other Metro East departments.
