Cybercrime: a growing concern in Calgary

The Calgary Police Service is dealing with more online crime then ever before.

Last January, it developed the Cybercrime Support Team to assist the Tech Crime Unit in their investigations into internet-based crime.

Unlike the Tech Crime Unit; which deals with hardware on computers or data on cell phones, the six member cybercrime team try to track down the internet trail.

“The cybercrime support team is really keen on following up on crimes that happen online or evidence of crimes that happen online and getting some knowledge and evidence of that,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who got the chance to visit both teams Wednesday afternoon. “But the real thing I learned, is the tremendous role they play in keeping people safe. Not so much about investigating crimes but, also about preventing them and about helping people who find themselves in dangerous situations and evidence of that happens online.”

The Cybercrime Support Team helped with 205 investigations last year and have already worked on 137 cases this year.
