Cybercrime Surge Concerns Police Committee

Lagos — THE Police Assistance Committee (PAC) has expressed concern over the rising cases of cybercrime in the country.

The committee said the trend, which has reportedly been on the rise in recent years, was increasingly damaging the image of the country.

Director General of PAC, Dr Martins Oni, said it was worrisome that the image of the country was being seriously eroded at a fast rate within the international community through the perpetration of cyber crime by Nigerians looking for easy ways to make illicit money.

“Cyber crime is spoiling our good name in the international community and we must do something about it. A few people who want to make money through internet crime should not be giving us a bad name.

“This is a problem that everybody should be concern on how to tackle it,” he said.

He noted that the committee was already intensifying efforts to support the police and other security agencies in fighting the menace.

Oni said several PAC field officers had been trained on how they could assist the police and other security agencies through information and intelligence gathering.

He emphasised the need to re-orientate Nigerians by necessary agencies of government such as the National Orientation Agency, on the colossal damage being done to the image of Nigeria locally and internationally through internet fraud.
