ACSC opens cybercrime reporting outlet for businesses, government

Australian businesses and government agencies will now be able to report online security incidents via the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC).

The ACSC was opened last month in Canberra, and brings together online security capabilities from across the federal government into a single location. The reporting service is part of the ACSC’s role to act as a hub for collaboration and information sharing with the private sector, state and territory governments, academia, and international partners.

ACSC coordinator Major General Stephen Day said that one of the key functions of the ACSC is to encourage and enable reporting of cybersecurity incidents.

“Every report helps the ACSC to develop a better understanding of the threat environment, and will assist other organisations who are also at risk,” he said.

“Cybersecurity incident reports are also used in aggregate for developing new defensive techniques and training measures to help prevent future incidents.”

According to Day, the ACSC expects businesses and government agencies to provide detailed summaries of their incidents, covering information including technical details that could be relevant for further investigation, whether the incident resulted in any compromise or service disruption, and if any sensitive information or individuals were specifically targeted.

Using the information that is collected, Day said the ACSC will then compile an incident report and conduct an investigation.

Meanwhile, members of the public will be referred to the newly launched Australian Cybercrime Online Report Network (ACORN) to report online incidents that they believe may be in breach of Australian law.

The Australian government also recently announced that the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet will be launching its first review into cybersecurity since 2008.

The government has the Cyber Security Operations Centre, which is operated by the Department of Defence. The government previously admitted that 95 percent of staff working for this department are part of Defence.
